What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is not a medical condition, but a collection of symptoms that occur when the sciatic nerve is injured or compressed. The sciatic nerves run from the base of your cervical spine down your back and branch out to run down each leg to your foot. Your sciatic nerve can become injured or compressed due to trauma, a herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, a bone spur or spinal tumor, spondylolisthesis, or complications of pregnancy.

Symptoms of Sciatica

The most common symptom of sciatica is lower back pain. This pain is accompanied by other symptoms, including:

  • Nerve pain, or a sharp burning or itching pain that radiates from your lower back and down one leg to your foot
  • A numb or tingling feeling in your lower back, leg, or foot
  • A pins and needles feeling in your lower back, leg, or foot
  • Muscle weakness in your leg or foot
  • Pain that gets worse when you move or if you sneeze, laugh, or cough
  • Pain that makes it hard to stand up, walk, or sit down

When Do You Need Treatment for Sciatica?

In some cases, sciatica symptoms will go away on their own. However, if you have sciatica symptoms that don’t improve with rest or that get worse, you should visit Dr. Jacobson.

What Is Spinal Decompression, and How Does it Treat Sciatica?

Spinal decompression is a nonsurgical treatment that addresses the underlying cause of your sciatica. During spinal decompression, you will lie on a traction table. As the table moves, it will gently stretch your spine, creating negative pressure that changes the force and direction of your spine. This negative pressure draws nutrients, oxygen, and water into your spine, which promotes healing. It can also cause a herniated or bulging disc to retract back into place and ease pressure on or compression of the sciatic nerve.
